The ancient Celts believed that at this time of year, the spirits of the departed returned to Earth to wreak havoc. To scare away these spirits, people dressed up in spooky masks and lit bonfires.
With the arrival of Christianity, Samhain merged with the Christian holiday of All Saints’ Day, which is celebrated on November 1. The night before, October 31, became Halloween. Over the years, Halloween has become a holiday filled with costumes, candy, spooky decorations and fun for all ages.
